Production capacity is rapidly increasing in East Asia and decreasing in Europe, as new plant is constructed and production switched to Asia.

The main companies producing ethanoic acid are Celanese (23%) and BP (21% ) in 2000. BP is the fastest growing producer and 2/3 of world production uses BP technology.
